Training: Energy in the Built Environment: Energy Efficiency and Building Integration of Renewables

To date the Welsh School of Architecture have produced and piloted the following CPD sessions develped for professionals in the built enrvironment:

Low and Zero Carbon Building Design Part one:
Energy Conservation in Building Standards and Passive design

This session looks at the energy conservation aspects of current building standards in the UK as well as the initial stages of passive design, integral to the delivery of energy efficient buildings.

Initial Steps towards Low to Zero Carbon Building Design
  • Climate Analysis
  • Passive Design Strategies
Case studies
  • Low Energy Demonstration Building, Tsinghua, China / Swiss Re, London / BRE, Watford / Design Centre Linz / Freiburg Solarhaus / BedZed and BowZed
Low and Zero Carbon Building Design Part two:
Building Integration of Low and Zero Energy Strategies

This session looks at the delivery and distribution of low to zero energy through building integration of energy efficiency and renewable energy systems.

Energy Efficient Systems:
  • Heat pumps / Mechanical ventilation heat recovery / Combined heat and power
Energy Efficient Distribution Systems
  • Floor heating / Radiant cooling
Renewable Energy Systems
  • Solar thermal systems / Photovoltaic / Wind turbine / Biomass

Low and Zero Carbon Building Design Part three: Energy efficient renovation and refurbishment:

This session looks at the improvement of energy efficiency in renovation and refurbishment of current buildings in the UK. The holistic and integral measures to apply for energy efficient renovation and refurbishment are delivered.

General introduction to energy efficient renovation and refurbishment
  • Current situation / What is energy efficient renovation and refurbishment / Practice of Renovation and Refurbishment / What to aim for / Barriers and restrictions
Measures for energy efficient renovation and refurbishment
  • Measures and solutions (Improved building fabrics / Replacement of windows and external doors / Replacement of heating and hot water systems/ Replacement lights and appliances)
  • Application and Checklist
  • Cost effectiveness
Case studies
  • Carshalton grove / Flagship home project / Gibson mill / Titanic mill

Low and Zero Carbon Building Design Part four: Process, standards and principles:

This session looks at the processes required through the planning, briefing, design, construction and occupation stages of the development process to enable the delivery of low to zero carbon buildings.

Energy Standards:
  • Part L / BREEAM (Inc Ecohomes) / AECB / PassivHaus / Code for Sustainable Homes
Design strategies for low to zero buildings:
  • Site Planning / Building Form / Building Fabric / Environmental Services / Construction / Commissioning / occupation
Procurement strategies for low to zero carbon
  • Traditional / Design and Build / Partnering
