Training Developed as part of WEST

As part of the Welsh Energy Sector Training Programme, three courses giving an introduction to marine renewable energy with a focus on tidal stream energy have been developed. Brief details are outlined below;

An Introduction to Marine Renewable Energy
  • Introduction to wave and tidal energy resources
  • Device design considerations
  • Current market and example technologies
Project development and site selection for tidal stream energy projects
  • Introduction to tidal stream energy data sources
  • Examination of baseline selection criteria
  • Power output estimation methodology
Environmental Impact of Tidal Stream Energy Projects
  • Description of devices and potential receptors
  • Assessment of risks
  • Impact assessment of tidal stream turbines.
An Introduction to power electronics for renewable energy systems
  • Power system topologies & system components
  • Power conversion techniques & power quality
  • Circuit design & reliability
Power Semiconductors - devices, models & techniques
  • Power integrated circuit techiniques
  • Device structures & isolation
  • Power device circuit electro-thermal modelling
Project - power converter with PFC
  • Practical project to design & construct a power converter to a given specification. The design includes a power factor correction stage to maximise the converter efficiency. The project includes testing and evaluation of the design
